Kets de Vries

Kets de Vries: ‘The new global world ensures that leaders are chosen on the basis of their ability to deal with international competition, globalisation of markets, the dissemination of technology, demographic shifts and speed of overall changes. Leaders of the next century will have to have skills that are tailored to the commitment of increasingly global competition. They completed a study in human science and/or technical science followed by a MBA. They probably have worked in a large number of foreign subsidiaries of their company. The new leaders will be team players, are accustomed to working in top management teams with people with different cultural backgrounds.

‘The soft interpersonal skills will be essential for the new global leader. Being able to operate effectively in a global economy, leaders must have strategic awareness and intense interest in the socio-economic and political situation of the countries in which they work. They  inspire, motivate people, and provide feedback’.*

Focused on the above Kets de Vries describes two roles for the leaders of the future:

  1. Charisma: Visions, Inspire and Motivate people
  2. Architect: Manage and Control.

Kets de Vries created a 100 questions containing leadership questionnaire designed to directors/managers to help them to assess their performance in the execution of the twelve main tasks. The questions are grouped in twelve dimensions, based on the range of properties that are necessary for global leaders. This questionnaire offers in our opinion a complete picture of the management tasks within an organization. The questionnaire measures the degree of competence in the following dimensions:

  1. Vision express
  2. Empowerment
  3. Activate
  4. Design and Manage
  5. Reward and feedback
  6. Team Building
  7. External orientation
  8. Global setting
  9. Tenacity
  10. Emotional intelligence
  11. Balanced life
  12. Stress Tolerance.

Kets de Vries created two questionnaires: a Self-test and an Observer-test. These are used for a 360-Degree feedback.
